The Toku Reo, Toku Ia Atamira Purua - My Language, My Sovereignty Poetry Project is a collaboration between Te Epetoma o te Reo Maori Kuki Airani, Wellington and Whitireia New Zealand, Social Work Service Learning Project(s).

The team is committed to creating accessible pathways for the whole community to participate, learn and enjoy the language of their heritage.

Oceania Media was approached to publish the group’s booklet of poetry with both English and Cook Island Maori translations included.

My Language, My Sovereignty Poetry Project

The purua (poetry) were written in the first language of the poets, some Papa’a and some Maori and the translations supported by family members.

Oceania Media then created a design template and completed layout out of the poems into an A5 42 page booklet.

We also registered the publication with the National Library and coordinated with our printed to organise copies for a Cook Islands Language Week celebration in Wellington.
